Cultural Arts

The City of Orlando Recreation Division's Cultural Arts Section offers a wide range of creative opportunities for the young and young at heart. Create a piece of pottery, learn about nature, or paint a portrait!

Pottery & Clay

The Pottery Studio

Pottery Studio: The Pottery Studio has been in existence for over 40 years and provides an environment for individuals interested in creating objects out of clay. The main focus of the pottery program is to provide a safe and relaxing atmosphere where individuals explore, invent, learn, and create at their own pace. This activity results in individuals feeling a sense of accomplishment and joy, which is the essence of recreation. The studio also hosts several nationally- acclaimed potters for two-day workshops.

Adult Clay: This is an "open" studio for adults were people can work independently up to 44 hours per week. If you are a beginner we will walk you through the first three hand building projects and then you'll have the basic information to create your own pottery. The studio has a wide range of equipment that includes 12 electric potter’s wheels, numerous kilns including a 50 cubic foot gas kiln and we also facilitate Raku firing at least once a week. This is an ongoing program, so enrollment can be at anytime during the 13-week session.

Family Night Pottery:  Bring out your inner child by working alongside your family creating unique hand-built projects in clay. Your children have to be at least 6 years old and completed kindergarten. The workshop occurs one Wednesday evening from 6-7:30pm. The cost is $10 per adult and $5 fro each child.

Intermediate Hand-building: A structured class setting that includes learning different hand-build techniques that individuals on all levels can master. The one on one instruction will help advance your knowledge of hand built pottery. This is a six week session is $60, 2 1/2 hours long on Thursday's. Please call for scheduled dates.

The "Pit Fire" Workshop:  A two-day event held at Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake that allows adults to work as a team to participate in the construction and primitive pit-firing of their pottery. There are lots of fun activities planned during the firing. Then, the finale is unloading of the pit.

Visiting Clay Artist Series: "The Pottery Studio" sponsors two nationally acclaimed guest clay artists each year. The two-day workshops are full of great hands-on information pertaining to creating clay objects.

Wheel Throwing 101: Beginner's to intermediate will benefit from the one on one instruction to learn the mysteries of making pottery on the wheel.This is a six week session is $60, 2 1/2 hours long on Friday's. Please call for scheduled dates.

22nd Annual Pottery Sale:  If you like hand crafted-pottery, attend “The Fiesta in the Park” at Lake Eola Park the first weekend in November. There will be hundreds of pottery pieces to purchase at great prices.

Kids’ Summer Clay Camp (6-16): Does your child want to play in the mud? If so, come join us and participate in the kid’s clay workshop, There are two four week, morning or afternoon summer sessions, This is an exciting opportunity to create many clay projects (from pinch pot animals to hand formed vases), An Art Extravaganza at Orlando City Hall will conclude the program with an exhibit and reception

Art Programs

"Natural Expressions":  Your child will have an opportunity to combine their love of Art and Nature at these unique workshops.  Nature classes will be taught at the beginning of the workshop followed by an Art class using the inspiration created by the nature class.  An Art Extravaganza at Orlando City Hall will conclude the program with an exhibit and reception. Cultural Art Outreach at Community Centers:  Children enrolled in the after school programs offered through the Recreation Division's Community Centers receive instruction in puppetry, pottery, dance, and visual arts. Staff from the Recreation Division’s Cultural Arts Section provides these classes. Call the Community Center nearest you for more details.

Nature Programs

Nature Programs:  Mayor Carl T. Langford Park Neighborhood Center offers classes and workshops on a variety of nature topics throughout the year. These programs are offered to participants in our after school programs, school groups, other organizations and the general public. For more information call (407) 246-2150.
