Families, Parks and RecreationLake Druid Park
Mountain bike enthusiasts will soon have a new place to enjoy their hobbies in the City of Orlando. Earlier this week Orlando City Council approved efforts to use grant money to develop and maintain a mountain bike park that will feature a pump track and trails through the woods. The park is located in the Coytown neighborhood of District 4, at the former Orlando Naval Training Center property, now owned by the City and commonly known as "Area C." These improvements will be created by the Orlando Community & Youth Trust, using a grant awarded to it by the Winter Park Health Foundation, as well as volunteer labor coordinated by the City's Parks’ Division and an experienced mountain biking organization, the Ocala Mountain Bike Association, Inc. (OMBA), which has an active membership group in Orlando. The park is tentatively scheduled to open in the late Summer/early Fall of 2011. This park land was acquired through the Federal Lands to Parks Program of the United States Department of the Interior National Park Service. This location at the corner of Coy Drive and Jamie Circle is currently closed to the public. Plans are underway to transform this former Navy base property into a mountain bike park at a date to be determined. Message from Jan Rahill, the park liaison: Your support for future volunteer workdays is appreciated and we will be in contact with you once dates are set. Your dedication is what will make this park a success. Please send any future correspondence directly to Janice Rahill, the City’s park liaison. She can be reached at janice.rahill@cityoforlando.net or 407.246.3504. Park Planning Process Materials:
June 2010: Leashed pets are allowed at all City parks, but not in playgrounds or athletic fields. Please clean up after your pet. |
