Major Renovations to Begin at Historic Dubsdread Golf Course

ORLANDO, FL (February 20, 2007) — After considerable planning and public input, the City of Orlando is making final preparations for renovation of the historic Dubsdread Golf Course in College Park.

The 1924 public course will be closing in mid-March and is scheduled to reopen in November 2007. The eight-month construction project will include complete reconstruction of Dubsdread’s greens, tees and fairways. Additionally, the renovation will include new waterways and drainage systems to improve storm water management in the neighborhoods surrounding the golf course, as well as upgrade water quality in Little Lake Fairview.

“The goal of this project is to preserve the original character and history of the 18-hole layout, while adding length and improving playability for golfers at all ability levels,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.
When Dubsdread re-opens later this year, the course will have much the same look and feel of the original, but with new turf, new drainage and a new irrigation system. All of the greens, tees, and sand bunkers will be reconstructed and golfers can expect more consistent and higher quality playing conditions.

According to District 3 City Commissioner Robert Stuart, the renovation of Dubsdread will have significant benefits for the entire neighborhood, not just golfers, “we’re preserving a major piece of community open space, and eliminating serious drainage problems that have plagued this area for years.”

Once the course is reopened, Dubsdread will continue to be accessible to the public, with emphasis on providing affordable public golf, group outings, tournaments and junior golf programs.

The Tap Room at Dubsdread, a public restaurant and catering facility located on the golf course, will remain open and in full operation while the course is being renovated. The Tap Room is located on Par Street just east of Edgewater Drive.

The March 2007 Dubsdread Golf Course Tournament:
Before the renovation process begins, some of the regular patrons of the course are hosting a “farewell” golf tournament to honor the old course one more time before enhancements are made. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at noon and will proceeds will directly benefit the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association (OMYGA). For more information about the Golf Tournament, please contact Dubsdread Golf Course at (407) 246-2551 or check out their web site at www.dubsdreadgolf.com.
