Mayor's Children and Education Initiative
Ensuring
Constructive Engagement During Out-of-School Time
Young people need safe
places to stay during out-of-school hours - places that provide
supervision from caring adults and productive activities that
support school success and youth development. Research shows that
participation in out-of-school programs results in better attitudes
toward school, higher educational aspirations, better performance on
achievement tests, higher grades and school attendance, less
disciplinary action, avoidance of drug and alcohol use, decreases in
delinquency and violent behaviors, avoidance of sexual activity and pregnancy.
The City funds a broad range of out-of-school activities for
Orlando’s children, primarily through its Families, Parks and
Recreation Department.
