History
Started in 1992,
the Orlando GIS program (then called GIS Base Mapping) has undergone
considerable change. Originally developed in cooperation with
Orange County GIS, the City of Orlando has aggressively pursued a modern
and efficient system of mapping their streets, annexations and
development. Starting
with GeoVISION (now owned by Autodesk), the City of Orlando GIS group used census
data, Mylar maps, zip code boundaries and address ranges to create
information for the system. By 1992, the time had come for the City of Orlando to branch
off into its own independent GIS group.
Over the years, the people have
changed, but the ideas of advance and efficiency have never left the City
of Orlando GIS program. Starting in 1993, with the inclusion of MapInfo
software as the eventual replacement of GeoVISION and to increase map
production. Then in 1999 ArcView GIS from ESRI Inc was also included as an
additional GIS software to supplement MapInfo. The name was changed
from GIS Base Mapping to Orlando GIS in 2000 to reflect the
transition from base map construction to GIS application development. Today,
with MapInfo, ArcView, Arc INFO and other in-house products, the
members of Orlando GIS continue to develop, maintain and apply GIS to our
changing city.
