On the outside, the landscape exhibits a
model Florida yard, promoting drought tolerant xeriscape that
conserves water and reduces the need for chemicals, fertilizers and
pesticides. The main objective of xeriscape is to establish and
maintain a healthy landscape by matching the right plants with
existing site conditions. The site for the Orlando House is mostly
shaded with Live Oaks and some partial sun in the front yard. As a
result, the challenge to design a xeriscape yard by using shade
tolerant plants was met.
Xeriscape landscaping practices also reduce the
amount of pollutants reaching water bodies through stormwater runoff
because fewer yard chemicals are used.
