Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Hosted 12th Annual Neighborhood & Community Summit and Recognized Neighborhood and Community Leaders
March 31, 2017 – ORLANDO, FL— Earlier this month, on Saturday March 18, 2017, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer joined more than 300 Orlando residents for the 12th Annual Neighborhood & Community Summit.
At the event, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer presented the annual Neighborhood Champion Award and Community Builder Award. These awards are presented once a year by the Mayor to publicly recognize and honor the contributions of the outstanding leaders and role models in the City of Orlando.
“I feel it is important to honor the individuals and organizations that give tirelessly of their time, talent and resources to improve the quality of life for all our residents,” said Mayor Dyer. “It was a humbling experience to be able to recognize a few of those citizens and organizations at the Neighborhood & Community Summit for the positive impact they have made in our community.”
The Neighborhood Champion award was presented to Jean Gertenbach of the Mai Kai Condominium community. District 1 City Commissioner Jim Gray joined Mayor Dyer on stage to present the award. For more than 12 years, Jean has served in various leadership roles in the community from Board President to Neighborhood Watch Block Captain and Coordinator. Most recently, she helped her community receive three Mayor’s Matching Grants, helping to fund the creation of the neighborhood’s first community garden, install infrastructure to help with drainage and landscaping to further improve the beautification of the area.
The Community Builder award was given to Heart of Florida United Way for their work providing assistance to Central Floridians in need since 1939. Most recently, United Way played a critical role in helping respond to victim and survivor needs following the Pulse tragedy and continues that work today through the operation of the Orlando United Assistance Center (OUAC). Heart of Florida United Way CEO Jeffrey Hayward and Heart of Florida United Way Board Chair Dr. E. Ann McGee accepted the award at the event.
“I’d like to thank everyone who participated in the annual Neighborhood and Community Summit,” said Mayor Dyer. “The City utilizes the Summit as a time to update residents on the latest best practices and equip them with the resources they need to ensure Orlando remains the best City in America to live, work and play.”
