Mayor buddy’s Book Club is a Success!
Mayor Dyer is thrilled to have more than 300 youth readers in his book club, which is increasing leisure reading among local teens and pre-teens. While Mayor Buddy’s Book Club is an online experience for most students, in some locations Mayor Buddy’s Book Club is a weekly book-focused discussion. The Walt Disney World Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida is one of these locations and has 18 active student members who have been feverishly tearing through our Book Club books. We would like to thank Jacky, Walt Disney World Branch’s Teen Director, who has encouraged this group continuously and congratulate this group of readers for exceeding our expectations by all reading the entirety of the assigned book. Reading Coach Volunteer Janet has met with this group weekly, offered reading suggestions and guidance and created an eager group of readers! We also thank Walt Disney World Resort, Mayor Buddy’s Book Club’s corporate sponsor, for their steadfast support.
Volunteer Reading Coaches Trained!
Our Volunteer Reading Coach training has been generously provided to our Mayor Buddy’s Book Club volunteers by our partner Susan Elliott at Snapters, an organization that is passionate about reading education with a special focus on helping reluctant readers. Our friends at Lake Highland Preparatory School have donated their facilities as a training location for more than 50 interested volunteers for this program.
The Garden Blossoms!
The Garden is blooming at the J.B. Callahan Neighborhood Center! Our Garden partners from 4-H have designed an educational program that is both interesting and informative! So far, Volunteer Gardening Guides and students have learned about composting, healthy eating, the differences between good and bad bugs and much more. Many of our youth participants in The Garden started out skeptical of the process, having had no prior experience growing, gardening or getting their hands dirty – literally. But with 6-weeks of hands-on experience, this group’s thumbs are rapidly turning green! The middle and high school youth will celebrate their harvest from the 10- week program on August 11 at the Callahan Center.
