Orlando Cares Launch
3.31.11

Mayor Buddy Dyer’s Cities of Service Initiative: Orlando Cares’ kicked off on March 31st to a full house at the downtown Orlando Public Library. Stakeholders who helped develop Orlando Cares were invited to celebrate the start of Orlando’s high-impact service plan. The City’s After-School All-Stars and local Boys and Girls Clubs brought several van-loads of students to participate in the festivities. These students became our first members of Mayor Buddy’s Book Club. The Walt Disney World Resort was announced as the corporate sponsor for Mayor Buddy’s Book Club and provided 200 free copies of our first Book Club book, The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan, through its publishing company, Hyperion Books. Volunteers were recruited for the Book Club and the COMPACT Expansion program. Lead partners for all six Orlando Cares initiatives recruited volunteers for exciting upcoming programs. There was great interest and excitement, especially for The Garden and learning how to grow a pizza garden!

COMPACT Expansion

Our COMPACT Expansion has already welcomed 14 new mentors and 31 mentees. Student success rates are already increasing and many new positive relationships have been developed. Throughout the spring, volunteers mentored students in work-groups on a variety of projects, helped them research universities, complete college applications and much more. Students and volunteers are looking forward to resuming mentoring activities after the summer break. More than 40 World Outreach Church volunteers have committed to become Compact mentors this fall.

Compact mentor training will resume in July.
