SCHOOLED End of Book Party
The End of Book Party for SCHOOLED by Gordon Korman at the Downtown public library was attended by more than 50 members of Mayor Buddy’s Book Club. More than a dozen volunteers gathered to celebrate and talk about the 3rd book completed by Book Club Members. Many came in tye-died shirts to celebrate the theme of SCHOOLED, which follows a young man as he shared his “hippy” culture with friends and classmates at a new school. Members of Mayor Buddy’s Book Club made bookmarks with googly eyes out of giant paperclips and joined in a hula-hoop competition. Mayor Buddy Dyer came to discuss the book with members, took photos with families and congratulated Book Club Members on reading another great book. A fierce competition took place during the Jeopardy portion of this celebration and all the participants turned out to be winners. We are proud to announce that we now have more than 450-members of Mayor Buddy’s Book Club and are still recruiting more.
Preschool Ambassadors’ Initiative Launch
Mayor Buddy Dyer’s Cities of Service: Orlando Cares launched its fourth initiative, Preschool Ambassadors, on August 31 at the Conway Learning Center in Orlando. Preschool Ambassadors’ program goals are to increase preschool attendance, quality of instruction and education resources for preschool programs throughout Orlando, in an effort to improve kindergarten readiness. The Adult Literacy League and The Early Learning Coalition are the lead partners for this initiative and were on hand to speak at the launch event. Parents, children, elected officials, community members and volunteers attended the launch. Mayor Buddy Dyer acted as Preschool Ambassadors’ first “Ready Reader” volunteer as he read Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergartento a class of four-year-olds. The children and the Mayor had a great time reading together. We are actively recruiting volunteers to act as Ready Readers for Preschool Ambassadors. Become a volunteer today!
