Collection & Use of Personally identifiable information:

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) requires that we inform parents and legal guardians about how we collect, use, and disclose personally identifiable information from children under 13 years of age; and that we obtain the consent of parents and guardians in order for children under 13 years of age to use certain features of our website.

We will not knowingly collect any personally identifiable information from children under the age of 13 without first obtaining parental consent. Prior to providing any personally identifiable (child’s name, email address, address, phone number, etc.) either by setting up a Mayor Buddy’s Book Club account or participating in any activity offered through our site, children under the age of 13 must obtain parental consent. Please note that we intend the term “parent” to include guardians.

Parental Consent:

Personally identifiable information will not be collected without prior parental notification and consent, which will include an opportunity for the parent to prevent use of the information and the child’s participation in the activity.

When a child registers to become a member of our site, we require that child to provide a parent’s e-mail address. We will then e-mail the parent notification of the child’s registration request, which will include an opportunity for the parent to prevent use of the information and the child’s participation in any activity on our site. A parent may refuse his or her child’s registration with our site. If the parent refuses to allow registration, we will delete the child’s information from our database.

Additionally, we may collect personally identifiable information from children when they participate in activities such as contests and prize giveaways. Before allowing a child under the age of 13 to use these features, we send an e-mail to the child’s parent requesting the parent’s consent to the child’s participation.

At any time parents can review the child’s personally identifiable information, ask to have it deleted, and refuse to allow any further collection or use of the child’s information. If a parent wishes to review, delete, or refuse to allow any further collection or use of his or her child’s information, they may do so by e-mailing our site operator listed below.

Additionally, a parent may consent to our collection of his or her child’s information without consenting to disclosure to third parties.

Please note that the following may occur without prior parental consent:

  • Collecting a child’s or parent’s e-mail address to provide notice and seek consent
  • Collecting an e-mail address to respond to a one-time request from a child and then deletes it.
  • Collecting a child’s e-mail address (or parent’s e-mail if the child is under the age of 13) to award prizes in contests and prize giveaways featured on our site.
  • Collecting an e-mail address to respond more than once to a specific request. In this case, we will notify the parent that we are communicating regularly with the child and the parent will have the opportunity to stop the communication before sending or delivering a second communication to a child.
  • Collecting a child’s name or online contact information to protect the security or liability of our site or to respond to law enforcement, if necessary.

Types of Personally identifiable information we collect:

We do not collect personally identifiable information from children unless they register on our site. The only information we collect from children during our registration process is a child’s first name, child’s last name, email address (or parent’s e-mail address if under 13), child’s age, grade level, how many books the child read last year, how often the child wants to read, favorite book, member name, and gender. We require ages to confirm the ages of our site guests, which may include children under 13 years of age. No other personally identifiable information is gathered during our registration process.

We may also contact your child via e-mail from time to time to allow your child to participate in activities such as surveys, question and answer sessions, synopsis, or quizzes about the reading. Your child will not be asked to give any personally identifiable information as part of these activities. All questions will be tailored solely for the purpose of discussing the Mayor Buddy’s Book Club suggested reading material. Parents of children under the age of 13 will receive these e-mails and may decide whether they wish to allow their children to participate.

From time to time, we may invite children that are registered on our site to participate in prize giveaways. Children that have already registered on our site may enter the contest or prize giveaways by providing the child’s e-mail address (or parent’s e-mail address if under the age of 13). The parent of a child under the age of 13 will receive the email notifying them of the child’s entry into the prize giveaway and the parent has the option of removing their child from the giveaway. In the event a child under the age of 13 wins the giveaway prize, we will use the parent’s email address to notify the winning child’s parent of the child’s prize and request the parent’s instruction on how they wish to obtain the prize. The prize may be picked up at City Hall located at 400 S Orange Avenue Orlando, FL 32801 or a parent may provide the child’s mailing address in order for the child to receive the prize.

Please note that we are prohibited by law from conditioning a child’s participation in any online activity on our site on the child’s disclosing more personally identifiable information than is reasonably necessary to participate on our site.

How We Collect Personally Identifiable Information:

When a child wishes to register with our site, he or she will be asked to fill out an online registration form by providing his or her first name, last name, a parent’s e-mail address (if under the age of 13), the child’s age, grade level, gender, how many books the child read last year, how often the child wants to read, favorite book, member name, and password.

The only other time we may request a child’s additional personally identifiable information is in contest or prize giveaways.

Our website will not assign cookies to your internet browser or other data saving mechanisms that may identify your browser.

How We Use and Share Personally Identifiable Information:

We use the parent’s email address to notify the parent of the child’s registration request.

We use the email address of children 13 years of age and older to allow them to participate in surveys, question and answer sessions, synopsis, and quizzes about the Mayor Buddy’s Book Club suggested reading.

We use the child’s age and grade level to verify the age of our site visitors. The child’s grade level is also used to suggest age-appropriate reading.

Disclosures to Third Parties:

We will not disclose personally identifiable information collected from children under the age of 13 to third parties except in the following circumstances:

  • As required by law;
  • Pursuant to requests from governmental agencies or law enforcement;
  • To protect a person’s property, rights, or safety;
  • In the investigation of a potential violation of the law;
  • To establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims;
  • Or to prevent, investigate, and identify persons potentially involved in activity that may expose us to legal liability.

We may use web traffic monitoring tools such as Google Analytics to monitor traffic on our site. Any information gathered will solely be used to help us develop content of our site. Such monitoring will only gather aggregated information and not disclose any individual user’s personally identifiable information.

Blog:

Mayor Buddy’s Book Club offers a blog that will include information about the suggested readings, questions about the reading, and provide children that are registered on our site an opportunity to comment on what they have read in the blogs. When a child posts a comment to our blog, the comment will be followed by his or her member name created at registration. We will never ask a child to post personally identifiable information in order to comment on the blog. These comments are also monitored by, and may be edited by our staff listed below.
