Bicycles: Their dual role

The City of Orlando recognizes the dual role bicycling plays within our growing community.  Performing a beneficial function in the City’s transportation system, bicycling offers an inexpensive and efficient alternative to the automobile.  In addition, increased bicycle commutation reduces congestion on our overburdened transportation network, while reducing production of carbon monoxide and other ozone depleting emissions.  Bicycling also plays a major role in satisfying the community’s recreational needs.  The City appreciates the benefits of bicycling and realizes the importance of providing a safe network of facilities for bicycle travel.  To this effect, Orlando prides itself on the progress it has made in implementing The City of Orlando Bicycle Plan.   Through the creation of an integrated network of on-street and off-street bikeway facilities, the City is reducing overall automobile trips, increasing accessibility for all residents and greatly improving quality of life.

Pedestrians: Vital Part of the City of Orlando

Pedestrians are a vital part of every transportation environment. The City’s Transportation Element of the Growth Management Plan recognizes the importance of pedestrians and establishes policies and objectives to address pedestrian needs. An important resource developed in response to these needs is the Pedestrian Facilities study.  This study will identify gaps in sidewalk continuity along the major thoroughfare network, within metropolitan activity centers, and within the Traditional City.  The study will also identify existing crosswalks at signalized intersections and pedestrian designated crossings, as well as recommended locations for additional pedestrian crossings and areas, including those accessing facilities such as transit stops, schools, and parks.

Based on the priorities identified in the Pedestrian Facilities study, pedestrian improvement projects throughout the city will be incorporated into the Capital Improvement Program. By 2010, the City will increase accessibility of all residents by providing safe, comfortable access to community facilities, neighborhood shopping and regional transit services.
