Commuter Cyclist Smarts
Ride Your Bike Like a Car -
Follow all traffic rules, including signaling, stopping and pulling
over when appropriate. It's not only legal, it's safer.
Bikes aren't always allowed on sidewalks, so know the laws in your
area.
Dress the Part -
A helmet is crucial when you're riding in traffic. If your
ride is long, carry your work shoes and ride in cycling or tennis
shoes. Reflective velco-closure straps keep pant legs out of
the way. And always plan for your return trip. A
lightweight, brightly-colored rain shell, a bright headlight and a
flashing taillight can save you if there's a shift in the weather or
you et caught in the dark. Visibility is everything!
Put it in the Bag -
Invest in a messenger bag, some panniers, or a back rack.
Nothing will derail your resolve faster than juggling lots of
"stuff" on your bike.
