City
Planning Division Receives Florida Award of Merit for Neighborhood
Planning
The City
of Orlando’s Planning Division recently received a Florida Award of
Merit in the Neighborhood Planning category by the American Planning
Association’s Florida Chapter. The winning application highlighted
community planning efforts in the area just south of Downtown
Orlando and included the
Downtown South Main
Street district, the
Orange/Michigan and
South Downtown Vision Plans, and the recently approved
Downtown South Neighborhood Improvement District (NID).
For the past several years, the Planning Division has been carefully
planning for continued growth in the area south of Downtown,
generally extending from the East-West Expressway to Michigan
Street. The area is highly visible from I-4, within close proximity
to Downtown and is anchored by one of our City’s largest employers,
Orlando Health. The area is poised for even more growth and
development as a SunRail commuter rail stop is planned at the Amtrak
Station.
Community planning efforts and vision plans are expected to guide
development and infrastructure investments in Downtown South for the
next 20-50 years.
