The
Villages of Southport was the first major private sector
reuse project at the NTC McCoy Annex property. In the
summer of 1996 the NTC Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA)
invited final proposals from eight short-listed
development teams for reuse of 660 single family and
duplex homes at the McCoy Annex, known as the "Capehart
Housing." The CRA's goal for the Capeharts was to
provide home ownership opportunities through the immediate
reuse of these homes.
Of five final proposals received, the CRA's Selection
Committee recommended a team headed by CED Construction
and Orlando Neighborhood Improvement Corporation (ONIC).
The CED / ONIC proposal included a detailed plan for the
renovation of the Capehart Housing and a commitment to
maintaining a high quality community.
Housing renovations at the Villages of Southport got
underway in January 1998. Sales were so strong that over
200 homes were sold in the first two months! By the end of
1998 the first new residents began to move in. By early in
2000 all 660 homes were sold-out! With its solid
original construction, modern amenities and fine
neighborhood character, The Villages of Southport has
become one of Orlandošs great neighborhoods. |
