Time: 5:30-7:00 p.m. (Wednesdays)
Location: Orlando Police Department Auditorium
EVENT: TEEN POLICE ACADEMY-SUMMER SESSION
This 8-week course will offer 90-minute classes to 13-18-year-olds from
throughout Orlando in an attempt to foster better understanding between the
police and community youth. Students who either reside or attend school within
the Orlando city limits will be eligible to attend this free program.
The Teen Police Academy is set in a classroom environment where the youth are
able to experience some of the training, procedures, and technology utilized by
the Orlando Police Department. Involved youth will be encouraged to actively
participate in the academy by asking questions, role playing and hands on
experiences.
The academy will cover diverse topics such as uniform patrol, domestic violence,
defensive tactics, drug enforcement, and police communications. Students will
have the opportunity to attend field trips to the Orlando Police Department’s
Crime Lab, the District Coroner’s Office, and the Orange County Jail. At the
conclusion of the 8-week program, students will participate in a graduation
ceremony where they will receive their Teen Police Academy diploma from Orlando
Police Chief Val Demings.
The 2nd Teen Academy class will begin Wednesday, June 18, 2008 and run weekly
between 5:30pm and 7:00pm through August 6, 2008. Applications for the second
class will be due by June 11, 2008.
