I want to be a detective (…bike officer…K-9 Handler).

At the Orlando Police Department, every sworn member starts in one of the Uniform Patrol Divisions. This is where they learn their trade, the city and the intricacies of our Department. During this time, the officer is also being evaluated for their personal drive, attention to detail, and abilities in the criminal justice system. Special positions, such as Detective, K-9 Officer, Mounted Officer, and Bike Officer are filled through a competitive process, competing against the other sworn members of our Department. We are fortunate, in that there has always been a lot of lateral movement within our agency, making for many opportunities. Most officers are considered viable candidates for our specialized positions within a couple years.
