Where do I report a crime committed on the
Internet?
If you or someone else is in physical danger due to an Internet crime, report it
to your local police IMMEDIATELY!
INTERNET SOLICITATIONS AND CONSUMER FRAUD: If you get an unsolicited e-mail
requesting a donation, please ignore it, or at a minimum, check out the
organization making the solicitation. There are two excellent sites you may
visit with respect to solicitations and consumer fraud. The first is the U.S.
Department of Justice site on internet fraud. The address for that site is:
http://www.usdoj.gov/fraud.htm. There is another site that lists the
National Database of Non Profit Organizations, called Guidestar at:
http://www.guidestar.com.
FILING CRIMINAL COMPLAINTS FOR INTERNET CRIMES: Law enforcement agencies in the
United States only have the authority to investigate crimes which occur in their
jurisdiction. In the vast majority of cases, agencies investigating complaints
of internet crimes have invested several hours of work only to find that the
crime is not within their jurisdiction. To counter this, the Federal Bureau of
Investigation (FBI) was tasked with the responsibility of investigating reported
internet crimes. Subsequently, the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) was
created to investigate reporting of internet crime. You may read some background
about the development of IFCC through an FBI Press release at:
www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel01/ifcc042301.htm. If you wish to report an
internet crime through the IFCC, their web address is: www.ifccfbi.gov.
