National Night Out 2013 (NNO) is coming!!!

August 6th is your night to shine!!! How will you support Safe Neighborhoods in the City Beautiful? The information below will give you all of the guidelines for your National Night Out party

Orlando’s National Night Out Theme: "Giving Crime and Drugs a Going Away Party"

Registration – You may complete your registration online here or call the Neighborhood Watch Unit at 407-246-2369, and a registration packet will be mailed to you. To be eligible for the NNO theme contest, registration entries must be received by 5 p.m., June 28, 2013. To guarantee receipt of a free NNO Party Package, you must register by July 15, 2013.

Crime Prevention Theme Party Contest - First, second, and third place prizes will be given to the NNO party scoring the highest on their theme party outline. Winning parties must have a crime prevention theme that ties in to Orlando's NNO theme. Your party will be judged with a rubric prior to the NNO event based on the following: Use of Theme, Creativity, Neighborhood & Local Business Involvement, Crime Prevention message & Education, and Clarity of Party Outline. Be sure to include a detailed narrative of your party plans with your registration form. Entries must be received by June 28, 2013. Each winning party will receive prizes and a visit from the NNO Special Caravan: Mayor Buddy Dyer, Police Chief Paul Rooney, and Fire Chief John Miller.

National Night Out Block Party Package - This package will include a NNO banner, NNO balloons, NNO t-shirts and a host of other give-a-ways that will assist in making your party more memorable. If your registration is received by July 8, 2013, the Party Package will be delivered to the address you provide on your registration form. If you submit your application after July 8th, you must use the following pick up schedule:

July 15 10am - 2 p.m.
July 16 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.
July 17 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.
July 18 10am – 2 p.m.

When picking up your party package at the Orlando Police Department Headquarters (100 S. Hughey Ave. Orlando, FL 32801), please call 407-246-2369 when you are 5 minutes away and a staff person will meet you at your car with your Party Package. This will help cut down your wait time. Upon arrival, please approach the gate at the rear of the building, press the button at the gate and let the staff person know that you are here to pick up NNO materials.

Free Self Defense Training & CPR Training - As a thank you for your dedication to Neighborhood Watch and National Night Out, the Orlando Police Department is offering three Women’s Self-Defense classes and three CPR trainings for Neighborhood Watch members over the age of 18. The self defense class is open to women ONLY and limited to 40 students. Click here to register for the Self Defense Class. The CPR class is open to men and woman and class size is limited to 20 students per class. Click here to register for the CPR Class. The class dates and locations are as follows:

To register for a class, you may also call 407-246-2369 and give the following information: Name, Address, and Phone Number, your Block Captain’s Name and the class date and title that you are requesting. You will then receive a confirmation letter with details on class, location, parking, what to wear and what to bring.

NNO Recruit Your Neighbor - March 25, 2013 through July 8, 2013. Recruit a new neighborhood and win a great prize!!! Great prizes will be given to NNO Organizers who recruit new streets to register and host their own NNO block party on their own street. The recruited street will receive the NNO Newbie Party Package, in addition to their regular NNO Party Package. Organizers – be sure and include the recruits name and contact info on your registration form. Earn two entries into the grand prize drawing if you are a veteran NNO organizer and you grow your party by 10%. Earn five entries into the grand prize drawing if you are a veteran NNO organizer and you recruit a new neighborhood/street to have their OWN party.

National Night Out Coloring Contest and Essay Contest – Get the children involved in your crime prevention efforts through our coloring contest for children ages 5 – 8 or the essay contest for children ages 9 – 12. Theme park tickets will be awarded to winning entries. Click here for a copy of the coloring page, contest rules, essay prompt and essay contest rules. If you are unable to print the coloring page, please call the Neighborhood Watch Office at 407-246-2369 and request that copies be mailed to you. We suggest that you set up a table at your event just for the children, complete with the coloring contest pages, paper for writing, crayons, pencils, and colored pencils. Encourage them to complete their contest entries during the party and you may even want to offer your own neighborhood incentive by selecting a winner on the day of the event. Then be sure and mail all of the entries in to the Neighborhood Watch Unit of the Orlando Police Department by August 12, 2013 for judging.

National Night Out Leaders Training – April 25, 2013, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the OPD Headquarters (100 S. Hughey Ave., Orlando, FL 32801). All Neighborhood Watch members are invited to participate in this training. Training will cover:

  1. A Day in the Life of a Patrol Officer

  2. A 9-1-1 Call – what happens after you call 9-1-1

  3. NNO Best Practices (presented by 2012 NNO winners)

  4. OPD Think Tank – Attendees will provide feedback to the Neighborhood Watch Unit on their successes and things that they would like to see changed or included in Neighborhood Watch and NNO.

National Night Out Planning Week – May 26, 2013 – June 1, 2013. Begin your planning early to prevent your group from feeling the last minute rush. Starting early will also allow you to get more people and more local businesses involved. This is the time to organize your planning committee and delegate responsibilities. Submit pictures of your Planning Week activities by June 14, 2013. Participate in NNO Planning Week and submit pictures by the deadline for one entry into the grand prize drawing (details below.)

National Night Out Teen Police Academy – June 17 – June 26, 2013. The academy is open to all high school students and is designed to offer a glimpse into the field of law enforcement. Sessions will cover topics such as uniform patrol, assault & battery, drug enforcement, cyber safety and the dangers of bullying. The students will also visit the police academy, Valencia College, and the University of Central Florida. They will talk to experts on college entry requirements, financial aid, student life and college sports. The academy meets daily for eight days from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided daily, at no cost and each student’s family will be invited to a catered graduation ceremony on the final day. Win Big Prizes – Each NNO Organizer will be entered into a drawing for great prizes. In past years, prizes have included stays at the Peabody, Dave and Busters gift cards, gas grills and theme park tickets. Be on the lookout for a list of the 2013 prizes.

Five ways to earn entries and win:

  1. Submit pictures of your NNO Planning Week activities and receive an entry into the drawing.

  2. Recruit a new street to hold their own NNO party and receive five entries into the drawing.

  3. Grow your NNO party by 10% and receive two entries into the drawing.

  4. Submit your NNO Registration Form by July 31, 2013 and receive an entry into the drawing.

  5. Submit your NNO Evaluation by August 13, 2013 and receive an entry into the drawing.

  6. Submit your best five photos from your event by August 13, 2013 and receive an entry into the drawing
