Event: Recruiting Panel Recommendations
Mayor Dyer and Chief Michael McCoy invited a panel of community and business
leaders to participate in the city’s latest initiative to gain public
involvement in how the Orlando Police Department recruits police officers. The
city’s goal is to fine-tune the hiring process to make it more effective and
representative of the community.
Dr. Stanley Stone, the Vice-President of Human Resources and Diversity at
Valencia Community College chaired the panel. On Monday, November 14, 2005, at
0900 hours, the panel met for the first time in the Chief’s Conference Room at
the Orlando Police Headquarters building. Mayor Dyer and Chief McCoy addressed
the panel at the start of the meeting and then a Recruiting Unit staff member
gave the panel an overview of the department’s staffing levels and described the
hiring process.
This panel was very unique. Unlike the vehicle pursuit panel, which focused on
an operational issue, this panel examined the very important process of how the
department goes about choosing officers. Police agencies around the country
understand that by hiring good people from the beginning, future conduct and
discipline issues can be reduced. This community panel was given an opportunity
to shape the future character of the Orlando Police Department.
The panel met eight times since November
2005 and is now ready to make their recommendations at a city council workshop
on October 30, 2006, at 1000 hours. Dr. Stanley Stone will do the presentation.
