Police Video Unit to receive awards for NSM documentary

Summary:
The Orlando Police Department Forensic Imaging Video Unit will receive two Crystal Reel Awards at a ceremony on Saturday, November 11 at the Plaza Theatre in Orlando.
The unit will receive the “Best Documentary/Special” and “Best Creative Concept – Documentary/Special” awards for their work on Calming the Fire of Civil Unrest. This 20-minute documentary recaps the efforts the police department and the Orlando community took to keep the peace during the National Socialist Movement (NSM) rally earlier this year. The police department is sending this documentary to police departments nationwide to help other communities handle the NSM demonstrations as successfully as Orlando.
The Florida Motion Picture and Television Association (FMPTA) holds the Crystal Reel Awards annually to honor outstanding achievement in the motion picture, television, audio recording and digital media industries in the State of Florida. Long recognized as the primary film and television competition in the State of Florida, the Crystal Reel Awards program has often been referred to as Florida’s version of the Oscars and the Emmys. Past attendees and recipients of the Crystal Reel Awards include Burt Reynolds, Michael Winslow (Police Academy), James Best (Dukes of Hazard), Arielle Kebbel (John Tucker Must Die), Johnny Martino (The Godfather), The Backstreet Boys and O-Town, among other community and industry leaders.

Calming the Fire of Civil Unrest features commentary from local officials, including Deputy Chief Pete Gauntlett, Deputy Chief Val Demings, District Five Commissioner Daisy Lynum and Chief Michael J McCoy mixed with excerpts from local news affiliates and police video footage.

The Orlando Police Department Forensic Imaging Video Unit consists of Terry Gariepy, Jed Ackerman and supervisor Abbi Petersen. While their primary job is processing video for criminal investigations, the unit also provides media releases, public relations and training videos, among other projects.
