What: Orlando Police Department Receive State and National
Awards for Traffic Safety Efforts
Summary:
The Orlando Police Department was recently honored for their Traffic Safety
Enforcement and Education efforts.
The IACP National Chief's Challenge, along with the Florida Law Enforcement
Challenge, are programs designed to recognize and commend law enforcement
agencies, Community Traffic Safety Teams, and members of the media who have
excelled at promoting traffic safety programs in their communities through
prevention, education, and enforcement. For the fourth year in a row, an OPD
entry was created and submitted. The Florida Award ceremony and winner's
announcement took place in June at Walt Disney World: OPD took First Place in
the Largest Police Category, resulting in the award of approximately $15,000 in
free traffic safety equipment. In Florida, OPD has placed Second in 2002, and
Third in both 2003 and 2004.
In October, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) made their
announcements: OPD took third place nationally in their agency-size category for
2005. This is the first time that we have placed nationally; the award came with
approximately $4000 in free traffic safety equipment.
