Event: “Operation Safe Semoran”

SUMMARY:

Synopsis of Problem:

In the last few months, there has been an increase in the number of traffic crashes and/or fatalities along the Semoran Boulevard Corridor. The East Patrol K dayshift squads want to change this trend by enforcing traffic laws along the Semoran Boulevard Corridor with zero tolerance for “Aggressive Driving.” “Aggressive Driving” includes the following violations; exceeding the posted speed limit, improper change of lanes, following too closely, violating traffic control devices, failing to yield the right of way and improper passing.

Goal:

The operation will maintain zero tolerance for aggressive violations by writing citations to violators on Semoran Boulevard between Lake Underhill and TG Lee Boulevard. Officers will educate the public during the traffic contacts about aggressive driving and the potential consequences. The focus of this enforcement is reducing traffic crashes in the designated area.

Plan of Operation:

“Operation Safe Semoran” will start on April 1, 2007 and conclude April 30, 2007. The East Patrol K squads will designate two officers from 0900-1500 hours to patrol the Semoran corridor stopping and ticketing violators. The officers will be in full uniform and utilize vehicles equipped with proper emergency equipment. An “Aggressive Driving” vehicle will be used when possible. OPD will compile statistics at the end of the operation to determine overall effectiveness in the reduction of traffic crashes and/or fatalities. The compiled statistics will be provided to the public via media release.

Staffing Resources:

East Patrol will provide staffing for this operation. The Special Operations Division will assist when available.
