Law Enforcement Torch Run
Summary:
On Tuesday, April 21, 2009 approximately 100 Orlando Police Department officers
and employees participated in the 28th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for
Special Olympics. Other participating agencies included the Orange County
Sheriff's Office, Apopka Police Department, Florida Department of Law
Enforcement and the University of Central Florida Police Department. The 3 mile
course started at Cypress Grove Park, to Holden Avenue and circled South Orange
Avenue. The course ended at the Russell Home, where a luncheon was held for all
participants.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 when a Wichita, Kansas police chief
saw an urgent need to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics.
One fund-raiser is the purchase of Torch Run T-shirts, which all participants
purchase to wear during the event. All proceeds from T-shirt sales go directly
to Special Olympics. The Orlando Police Department was able to raise over $4,000
for the Special Olympics through T-shirt sales and other fund-raising
activities. The Orlando Police Department Torch Run Chairman Lt. John Mina
stated, "The Special Olympics Torch Run is a great way to share camaraderie with
other departments and give back to the community at the same time. This year's
event was a huge success and we look forward to having more participants and
raising more money in 2010".
