Summary:

In July 2008, the Palms Apartments were identified as an area of increased crime that negatively affected the community.  Chief Demings and her staff met with the residents in the Mercy Drive area to seek their input on how to improve their lives as well as their community. Shortly thereafter, several committees were formed within the Orlando Police Department to assist residents in reducing crimes and maintaining livable neighborhoods.

The committees consisted of Property Management, Quality of Life, and Crime Prevention. Since that meeting, the residents began a transformation process together with representatives of the Orlando Police Department, Orange County Public Schools, Faith Based Community, Work Force of Central Florida, and the Palms Apartment Management.

To date, several health, safety and property maintenance issues have been resolved and a new local property management “Cambridge Management” has new facilities maintenance in place. The overall crime comparison for the year 2008 vs. 2009 has reduced 21.11% at the Palms Apartments and overall crime is currently down 31.25% for January 1, 2010 thru April 23, 2010 compared with January 1, 2009 thru April 23, 2009.

The residents and their community partnerships have significantly and successfully changed their rental community and as a result, Windsor Cove Apartments is now the new name of the rental community. The old name was no longer representative of the community and the residents who together made efforts to reduce crime and improve their quality of life.
