Event: 13th Annual Kicks for Guns

Date: Friday, August 19, 2011

Time: 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Location: Orlando Baptist Church, 500 S. Semoran Boulevard

The Orlando Police Department will host its 13th annual “Kicks for Guns” event on August 19, 2011, from 7:00am until 7:00 pm. This year the event will be held at the Orlando Baptist Church located at 500 S. Semoran Boulevard, Orlando, Florida. This will be the first time that this event has been held on the eastside of Orlando. Real Radio 104.1 along with a host of other businesses including the Orlando Police Department is sponsoring this event. The Primary purpose of this event is to get guns out of the hands of young kids.

The Orlando Police Department was the first to partner with REAL Radio, in 2001, to start the Kick 4 Guns campaign. There will be multiple locations throughout the different cities and counties in Central Florida, along with a host of other law enforcement agencies participating in this event, including West Palm Beach.

Over the past three years the locations have steadily increased. In 2009, we had 7 locations and collected 1090 firearms. In 2010, we had 9 locations and collected 1356 firearms in 12 hours. In 2010, there were 45 sawed off shotguns and 7 stolen guns turned in.

During this event anyone can turn in a gun anonymously with no questions asked regardless of who you are. For citizens turning in firearms, they will receive a $50.00 gift card or a pair of tennis shoes. All Guns must be unloaded and placed in either a bag or a case. A range officer will be present to assist anyone who has a problem unloading their gun.
