Flood Map Update Project in Orlando
Important changes have occurred in the
City of Orlando. A multi-year project to re-examine flood zones and
develop detailed digital flood hazard maps has been completed. This
effort was part of the national map modernization project to produce more
reliable flood risk data and report it in a digital format. This new
format enables communities to overlay and analyze flood data with
street patterns, stormwater facilities and existing property
improvements. In Orlando, surface water flow and drainage patterns have
changed significantly in the 32 years since the first Flood Hazard Maps
were produced for our area.
These changes are related to land
development, erosion, land use, and other natural forces. The new Flood Hazard Maps
are up-to-date with these changes and reflect current flood risks. New technology has
provided much more detailed terrain modeling that translates to more
accurate floodplain mapping. The City, Orange
County, various other local communities and the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) have revised the Flood Hazard Maps, also known
as Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRM).
The new maps became effective
September 25, 2009, after a period of
public review and the community officially adopted them. These updated
digital flood maps allow property owners to make better financial
decisions about protecting themselves and their property. The maps also help community officials, engineers, builders and others to make
important determinations about where and how new structures and
developments should be built. As a result, our community is a safer
place to live.
