The Stormwater Division collects quarterly water samples from each lake in the City so
that water quality can be determined. The results will be compared to
previous data collected and used to establish baseline conditions so lakes
that have been degraded or are being degraded can be identified. Once
these lakes are identified, corrective action can be determined and
implemented, if possible. Results from the analysis of these samples
are reported in the Division's annual Lake
Water Quality Report. Beginning in 1996, the report was expanded to
include water quality history and a bathymetric map on each lake. Orlando also supports the Florida LAKEWATCH program for any lake within City limits. LAKEWATCH is a citizen participation program which trains volunteers to collect samples on a monthly basis for laboratory analysis performed by the University of Florida. The Division financially supports the program by purchasing the sampling equipment needed by the volunteers, training of volunteers, and assists with storage and transportation of the samples to the laboratory in Gainesville.
