What does a wastewater collection system do? The collection system carries wastewater from all the homes, businesses, industries, schools, wells, from anyplace that generates wastewater to a place where it can be cleaned up. Some of the collection lines are small, just big enough to stick your hand inside. Some of the lines are so big you can walk inside! These lines are called gravity sewers because they use gravity to move the wastewater. Sometimes, though, gravity isn't enough. To move wastewater over long distances requires a lot of energy, more than we can get by gravity alone. In these cases, the gravity sewer ends at a pumping station.
