Welcome to the Engineering Division, the Division is headed by James D. Hunt, P.E., Deputy Director of Public Works-City Engineer. The Engineering Division is responsible for managing the Engineering Administration, the Solid Waste Division, the Streets and Stormwater Division and the Engineering Survey Services Section. Here you can find the requirements for the City’s Engineering Standards as set forth by City Code. The Engineering Standards Manual, which is currently in its 5th Edition, was adopted in April 2016. The standards are for engineering design and permitting requirements for any development within the City of Orlando.
Additionally, you can find information on living in and developing within and around the floodplain, as the City of Orlando is a partner and participating agency in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Community Ratings System (CRS) and has standards to follow as being a part of the program. This includes developing more stringent standards and regulating current standards in meeting these requirements. One way the City is working to be a more safe and conforming agency is by requiring a one foot freeboard requirement, that not only protects life and property but also helps in the City’s goal of helping consumers lower their flood insurance premiums as part of the CRS program. Currently residents in the areas designated as a Special Flood Hazard Area receive a 20% savings on the cost of flood insurance, whereas those outside of the Special Flood Hazard Area receive a discount of 10%.
