|MECHANIC III - AUTOMOTIVE|
|Performs skilled mechanical work analyzing and diagnosing problems; inspecting, replacing and/or repairing defective parts, and performing preventative maintenance on City automobiles, tractors, mowers, trucks, street sweepers, equipment, fire trucks and equipment, police cars and/or motorcycles, and small engines; assigning, overseeing work and training of lower level mechanics. Employees assigned to this classification perform a variety of tasks requiring specialized knowledge and skills. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.|
|Performs analysis and diagnosis of mechanical and/or electrical malfunctions of City vehicles including automobiles, trucks, tractors, mowers, motorcycles and equipment by test driving or use of testing equipment such as engine analyzers, spark plug testers, compression gauges, etc.
Assigns/oversees work and trains lower level mechanics in assigned area; ensures safety procedures are followed; insures parts and equipment available to complete work assignments.
Maintains records of vehicle repairs parts used and labor expended; orders or obtains parts and supplies as needed.
Operates power tools and equipment to perform repairs such as pneumatic wrenches, machine tools, (lathes, grinding machines) welding and flame cutting equipment, jacks, cranes, hoists, etc.
Repairs and/or replaces defective parts; repairs consist of, but are not limited to, engine overhaul, repair/replacement of brakes, transmissions, clutches, motor parts, electrical/electronic systems, hydraulic systems, gear boxes, belts, gaskets, etc.
Inspects and repairs, replaces and/or adjusts headlights, windshield wipers, tires, turn signals, vehicle fluids, blades, etc.
May be required to construct/rebuild parts by hand or machine, remove and repair/replace or paint equipment or vehicle body parts.
Operates City vehicle to pick up parts and supplies from vendors, to road test vehicles repaired, or to make service calls.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
|Knowledge of standard principles, practices, methods, and tools of the mechanic trade.
Knowledge of occupational safety rules and regulations and health hazards and ability to ensure adherence.
Skill in the correct, safe, and accurate use of tools and equipment relevant to the mechanic trade.
Ability to analyze and diagnose problems and perform required corrections.
Ability to maintain records, estimate costs, and order necessary parts and supplies.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, plans, schematics, drawings, blueprints, and bulletins.
Ability to schedule work and train lower level mechanics.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely using a two-way radio.
Ability to stand for extended periods, work in awkward positions, confined areas, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and push/pull/lift heavy parts (up to and including 50+ lbs) to perform repairs; exposed to chemicals, fumes, noise, and inclement weather.
Some positions require the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. May also be required to work non-traditional work week (ie Tuesday through Saturday.
|High school graduate plus three (3) years mechanical experience in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Supervisory training desired. Must be able to read and interpret plans and technical bulletins. Required to own standard set of mechanic tools.
CAREER PATH PROGRESSION:
Employee must accumulate three (3) years experience in appropriate mechanical field, and furnish documentation of 4,050 on-the-job training credits, which are subject to verification by "Review Board".
All on-the-job training hours competencies must be completed at no less than 80% of required hours, provided total hours are met.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
Valid Florida Driver License is required at time of employment. Class B license required within six months of employment.
