|Under general supervision, applies knowledge, skills and abilities to perform responsible maintenance activities on power generation equipment; performs a variety of mechanical maintenance and repair activities on a wide range of industrial equipment to maintain the safe and efficient operation of wastewater treatment plants and lift stations and to avoid damage to equipment involving the installation, operation, maintenance, testing and repair of high voltage electrical generation and distribution systems, facilities and related systems, transformers, generators, switchgear, metering and control systems, equipment, machinery, power appliances, fixtures and other components within acceptable national, state and local codes, ordinances, safety rules and electrical standards.|
|Troubleshoots and diagnoses generators and associated equipment; when malfunction occurs, determines appropriate method of correction and coordinates and/or performs required maintenance or repair
Disassembles power generation equipment and rebuilds, repairs and/or replaces necessary parts
Inspects and checks performance of power generation equipment with the use of precision instruments such as micrometer, pyrometer and vernier scale; compares measured values and adjusts to acceptable tolerances
Maintains records of performance checks and service of generation equipment in order to anticipate and prepare for future malfunctions.
Plans, schedules, and performs corrective action and preventive maintenance to repair or modify defects and maintain operating condition of generation equipment.
Operates safety equipment such as self-contained air packs, monitoring instruments, etc. to perform repairs in hazardous areas.
Reviews and interprets blueprints, plans and specifications to determine tolerances and procedures for proper operation and maintenance/repair of generation equipment.
Estimates time, parts, tools and equipment needed for generator repair and maintenance projects and completes appropriate forms to obtain items.
Provides input to Safety Coordinator regarding proper operating procedures with other plant personnel to ensure proper operation and maintenance of generation equipment.
Makes recommendations as to design changes to improve the performance or maximize the operational life of generation equipment and provides input as to the specifications for new equipment.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
|Knowledge of theory concepts of power generation and stand-by power generation - diesel fuel applications.
The knowledge of electrical codes, utility standards and safety programs as governed by rules, regulations and guidelines of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, ANSI, equipment manufacturers and others.
Knowledge of internal combustion engines and power generators.
The knowledge of (and skill in operating) the tools, precision measuring instruments and equipment of the electrical and electronic trade and detailed skills in their safe use, proper care and maintenance.
The knowledge and skills in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
Ability to perform journeyman level electrical and mechanical services in the installation, maintenance and repair of generator equipment and associated apparatus.
Ability to locate and repair defects and to design and incorporate necessary modifications.
Inspects, tests, evaluates, calibrates and updates generator systems and wiring to improve reliability and to assure dependability and safety and compliance.
Responds to 24-hour emergency calls/situations to repair remote generator systems.
Remains current on job specific expertise through various sources (e.g. trade publications, trade shows, vendor communication, etc.) to keep abreast of the latest technological developments and products to improve generator reliability.
The ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
Ability to work individually or as a team member to complete work assignments satisfactorily.
Skill in communications, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with supervisors and coworkers sufficient to exchange or convey information.
Capacity and initiative to learn new operating systems, equipment and procedures.

Ability to work with a minimum of supervision
Knowledge of the trade occupational hazards and safety precautions while working in confined spaces, aerial or elevated locations, extreme temperatures, excavations, and other environmental caused conditions.
The ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from lifts, ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
To perform the essential functions of the job, incumbents must be able to perform the following: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions (Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects).
Ability to distinguish frequencies and sounds, color codes and odors in the operation of equipment in order to troubleshoot for repairs.
|Candidate must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and (based on level - Entry I, Standard II or Proficiency III) a number of years experience maintaining co-generation equipment. Military experience is acceptable, but must have experience with a generator manufacturer (Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, and/or Cummins). Must have direct hands-on electrical and mechanical experience servicing and repair equipment used to produce power.
Entry Level (I) requires a high school diploma and two (2) years of journeyman-level experience in the repair and maintenance of standby generator and/or uninterrupted power supply systems. Education or technical training in a field related to power generating plants or related electrical equipment through a recognized trade union, technical school or equivalent, accredited college of university may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
Standard Level (II) requires three (3) years experience as an Entry Level Power Plant Mechanic; OR five (5) years of journeyman-level experience in the repair and maintenance of standby generator and/or uninterrupted power supply systems. Education or technical training in a field related to power generating plants and related electrical equipment through a recognized trade union, technical school or equivalent, accredited college or university may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience.
Proficiency Level (III) requires three (3) years experience as a Standard Level Power Plant Mechanic; OR eight (8) years of journeyman-level experience in the repair and maintenance of standby generator and/or uninterrupted power supply systems. Education or technical training in a field related to power generating plants and related electrical equipment through a recognized trade union, technical school or equivalent, accredited college or university may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience.
NOTE: One year of work experience is equivalent to thirty semester hours of coursework from an accredited college or university.
