|Performs paraprofessional, legal support services for attorneys in one of the civil or criminal sections of the Office of Legal Affairs. Employees assigned to this classification perform a variety of specialized confidential tasks involving legal research, preparation of case files and legal documents, and general administrative assistance as needed. Work is reviewed through observation, conversation and evaluation of results achieved.|
|Conducts legal research as assigned, either in-house or at the Orange County Bar Law Library, including shepardizing cases; summarizes information and presents findings to attorneys.
A Paralegal assigned to the Criminal section:
a) handles the administrative processing of all cases presented to the office pursuant to the Contraband Forfeiture Act, including factual investigation, collection and preparation of necessary documents, and routing correspondence and communication with interested parties.
b) investigates claims and legal complaints against the Police Department; interviews officers, collects pertinent documents, analyzes case and reports findings to Legal Advisor and Chief of Police. Also coordinates with Office of Legal Affairs, outside counsel on appropriate disposition of cases. Handles public records requets.
A Paralegal assigned to the Land Development and Transactions section:
a) researches and prepares drafts of legal documents such as complaints, responses and cross claims in connection with the Code Enforcement Board, foreclosures, and complaints against the City; researches City property lines and composes correspondence relative to all research.
b) maintains real estate form files; drafts documents such as deeds, easements licenses, developer's agreements and contracts.
A Paralegal assigned to the General Civil Section:
a) attempts to recover money owed the City as a result of unpaid bills, rents, leases, license fees or bad checks through standard collections methods, including preparation of court pleadings and notices of claims in bankruptcy proceedings when necessary.
b) investigates and collects information on liability claims, including communication with employees, managers, risk management personnel, outside counsel and insurance adjustors.
c) prepares drafts of legal documents, conducts background checks, prepares medical summaries.
Performs other related duties as required.
|Knowledge of law office policies and procedures.
Knowledge of Westlaw and Microsoft Word highly desired.
Knowledge of legal research procedures and techniques.
Knowledge of filing systems and records management.
Ability to research, analyze, and condense large amounts of information into clear, concise form for attorney review.
Skill in the operation of personal computer to perform on-line legal research functions.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting organizational rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Ability to perform routine to complex administrative support activities; research and compile data; and prepare correspondence and reports.
|Associate Degree in Legal Services or related field and two (2) to three (3) years experience as a Legal Assistant, one (1) of which must have been as a paralegal doing legal research in an area relevant to the area of assignment (criminal law, real property, or general civil); or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A four (4) year college degree is preferred. Must pass police background investigation which includes polygraph.
