|Performs professional work in public and media relations as press secretary/spokesperson for the Mayor and the City of Orlando, providing written materials and speeches; provides public relations, marketing and media expertise to the Mayor and the City. Work is performed under the administrative direction of the Chief of Staff to the Mayor and is reviewed through reports submitted, conference and results achieved.|
|Acts as an official representative of the Mayor and the City of Orlando as assigned by the Mayor.
Serves as spokesperson for the Mayor and the City in matters pertaining to public policy, special events, emergency response and program initiatives.
Coordinates all public appearances by the Mayor including press events, speeches and speaking engagements.
Serves as speech writer and editor for the Mayor; researches and prepares background material for speeches and policy decisions; writes articles, essays and other material for presentations by the Mayor.
Develops long-range publicity and implementation strategies to increase public awareness of City services, quality of life, public policy and program initiatives.
Maintains working relationship with members of the news media, alerts affected City representatives to impending media coverage, and generates strategy for positive media coverage of City-related events and issues.
Proactively publicizes city services, departments and programs locally, regionally and nationally.
Serves as liaison with the communication department members to ensure consistency of key messages in all plans and initiatives.
Works with Department Heads to advise and coordinate public relations efforts for major announcements.
Monitor local and regional news sources for topics of interest and importance to the Mayor and City of Orlando.
|Knowledge of municipal government, including objectives, programs, projects, activities and challenges.
Demonstrated skill in the preparation and production of printed and audio/visual materials.
In-depth knowledge of integrated communications, media relations and local and regional media markets.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to represent the City at public speaking engagements.
Ability to write speeches on various issues.
Performs other related duties as required
|Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public relations, journalism, English or communications and 4-8 years experience in public relations or news writing. Master's Degree course work in communications, marketing, public administration or public relations preferred. Agency, speech writing and copy writing experience also preferred. Will consider an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.|
