Mayor's Message

Dear friends,

This Monday, we will observe Memorial Day, a time to honor and give thanks to those who died for our nation. With American soldiers currently fighting overseas, it is important that we remember with appreciation and pride those who gave their lives for the noble causes of freedom and peace. At Orlando’s Greenwood Cemetery, American flags will be placed at the graves of military veterans to commemorate their contributions to our country. While enjoying the Memorial Day holiday, take a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice out of love for their country and those who stand vigilant to protect us and our freedoms. I also ask that you keep the brave men and women currently serving our country in Iraq and other locations in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
Mayor

City Council Update

The Blueprint for a Sustainable and Economic Impact

The development and construction of the Community Venues presents the City and its Venue partners with a unique opportunity to make a significant long-term positive impact in the local community in general, and the minority community specifically. The Blueprint for a Sustainable and Economic Impact, presented at Monday’s City Council workshop, provides a comprehensive approach that includes the City’s Minority and Women Business Enterprise program and engages other local businesses and residents. The City wants to ensure maximum opportunities are afforded to local, small and historically disadvantaged businesses in the areas of construction services, job creation and training, business development and growth and the procurement of goods and services.

The City will leverage this investment to create a sustainable economic impact for the local community. The Blueprint provides framework for implementing and ensuring broad-based community participation.

Community Venues

The City Council approved the development and operation agreements for the three Community Venues: the refurbished Citrus Bowl, the events center and the performing arts center. This is a significant milestone as the City continues working with the County on this process. The approval of these agreements allows the County and City to work on the interlocal agreement to finance the construction of the venues. To watch the meeting or view the presentations, visit the Community Venues section at CityofOrlando.net.

Joe Robinson, New Chief of Staff

On Tuesday, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announced the transition of the Chief of Staff from Cheryl Henry to Joe Robinson. Robinson, a former Orlando Police Department Captain and Deputy Chief of Staff, will ensure the Mayor’s vision and goals for the City are in-line with its residents, Commissioners and City partners. Additionally, he will be responsible for managing special projects and policy initiatives, and will be an integral part of moving Mayor Dyer’s comprehensive Public Safety Initiative.

“I look forward to leveraging Joe’s more than 25 years of service to the City and Orlando Police Department,” said Mayor Dyer. “His vast institutional knowledge will assist our City as we remain squarely focused on public safety and plan for our community’s growth.”

The Mayor also announced the appointment of Brie Turek, formerly the Press Secretary, to Deputy Chief of Staff. In her new role, she will serve as a liaison between the Mayor's Office, City Commissioners and community partners, identifying emerging issues of importance to the City and its citizens, and advising on ways to address them. She will be responsible to ensure policy matters and citywide information is effectively communicated and accessible to the public.

Carson Chandler assumes the role of Press Secretary. Chandler brings a broad range of communications experience to the City of Orlando. Most recently, he has served as Vice President of Aker Partners, a public affairs firm in Washington D.C, and a U.S. House and Senate press secretary.

Cheryl Henry is leaving the City to re-enter her career in the private sector. “We’ve been fortunate to have Cheryl devote nearly three years to serve the citizens of Orlando at this critical time for our City’s future,” said Mayor Dyer. “Cheryl’s counsel and guidance was invaluable, specifically in the advancement of the community venues, and she will be missed.”

To be prepared, follow these simple steps.

  1. Prepare a kit of emergency supplies
  2. Make a plan for what you will do in an emergency
