Mayor's Message

Dear friends,

This Monday, Orlando Police Chief Michael McCoy and I announced a bold initiative to curb the rise in violent crime. The plan, “Operation All Hands on Deck”, part of the three-year multi-million dollar public safety initiative, will return supervisors and managers to the streets to patrol exactly where the most crime is occurring and create a strong presence where it is most needed.

The 30-day initiative places added police patrols on the street in targeted “hot zones” identified as high crime pockets by the Orlando Police Department’s Operations Committee. Nearly 90 additional officers and supervisors from specialized units, including the Chief, management staff, mounted patrol and school resource officers, will be redirected to supplement patrol efforts in the 25 designated areas.

“Operation All Hands on Deck” is an enterprising and aggressive tactic to decrease Orlando’s rise in violent crime. In a time when we’re striving to do more with fewer resources, this is the type of program we need. This effort also illustrates the commitment of our police department on every level. From the bottom to top, officers, supervisors and managers are all part of this plan. Developed by our patrol offices and supported by the entire Department, this type of innovative thinking demonstrates how devoted the fine men and women of the Orlando Police Department are to keeping Orlando a safe City.

As part of our overall public safety effort, the Orlando Police Department has launched new initiatives, established new partnerships and reallocated staff resources. We are aware that there isn’t a single answer to address public safety, however, we will take every opportunity to empower and engage our community to work together and reverse this trend.

Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
Mayor

Mayor in the Community

On Saturday, June 9, Mayor Dyer attended the Z. L. Riley Park Expansion Neighborhood Meeting and Bar-B-Que. This community meeting allowed residents to give their suggestions for the new park design and layout.

On Wednesday, Mayor Dyer and Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty met with representatives from Florida Hospital, Orlando Regional Healthcare and Nemours to discuss Nemours’ proposed plan for children’s healthcare services in the Lake Nona area.

As a result of this meeting, and on behalf of the Central Florida community, the Mayors are requesting that the Agency for Health Care Administration become actively involved in reaching an agreement between our existing providers of children’s services, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Florida Hospital, and the Nemours Foundation which has proposed a new children’s hospital for our area.

City Council Update

At the Monday, June 18 City Council meeting, Families, Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Early will present the Parramore Kidz Zone’s Annual Report at the 10 a.m. Workshop. The Parramore Kidz Zone (PKZ) is modeled after the well-known Harlem Children's Zone in New York City. PKZ aims to lower teenage pregnancy, juvenile crime and child abuse rates among children in this neighborhood, and also improve their school performance. The program works to accomplish this goal by promoting quality early childhood education, after school programs, programs that build family economic success, youth development programs for teenagers, access to health care, mentoring, and more.
