Dear friends,
This Wednesday, we celebrated our nation’s independence with Fireworks at the Fountain at Lake Eola Park. Since 1888, Lake Eola Park has served as a common place for friends and family to gather in Orlando, and still today the park continues to be a place to enjoy special events, concerts and family gatherings.
This year, we also celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Centennial Fountain, the proud centerpiece of Lake Eola that has become an icon for our community. The inspiration of Linton Allen, a local banker, the fountain was commissioned by the Orlando Utilities Commission in 1956 and formally dedicated on October 5, 1957 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the naming of Orlando. Few people at that ceremony could have imagined the impact that this new fountain would have on Lake Eola Park and the City.
In honor of its fiftieth anniversary, the City has produced a special television show, “The Centennial Fountain,” which will air on Sunday, July 8 at 6:00 p.m. on WRDQ Channel 27, Brighthouse Channel 10. Find out why the fountain isn’t centered in the lake, how they celebrated it’s dedication and more interesting stories from people involved with creating the fountain.
Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer Mayor

National Night Out
National Night Out returns on Tuesday, August 7, 2007. This community-oriented event, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, brings neighbors together for a crime and safety awareness night. Last year, Orlando came in third place nationally for the number of neighborhood groups and residents participating in the event. Crime watch groups around the City will hold rallies within their neighborhood to increase program awareness.
This year, a kick-off party will be held in front of City Hall starting at 4:30 p.m. Mayor Buddy Dyer will be joined by the Police Chief Mike McCoy, Fire Chief Jim Reynolds and City Commissioners while he reads a proclamation for National Night Out. The party is open to the public and will feature radio station Z88.3, various mascots, children's activities and refreshments.
You can participate in National Night Out by leaving your outside lights on, getting to know your neighbors and reporting suspicious activity. For more information on the event or how to set up a neighborhood watch in your neighborhood contact Laura Velez at (407) 246-2644 or Laura.Velez@cityoforlando.net.
