Mayor's Message

Dear friend,

On Monday, July 23, the Orlando City Council approved the Interlocal Agreement for one of the most significant public/private partnerships in the history of the region - a new events center, performing arts center and renovated Citrus Bowl. Tomorrow, this agreement goes to the Orange County Board of County Commissioners for the final approval.

The City and County votes are the culmination of many years of thorough research, careful planning and comprehensive public input. Coupled with the City of Orlando's history of success with owning and operating public Venues, the proposed framework is fiscally responsible and makes certain the Community Venues will be built cost effectively and operated efficiently.

The widespread support for the Venues has been incredible...we have heard from our residents, businesses and community groups...and they are eager to see us pave the way for the Venues and entertainment options they deserve.

The decision to build these critical assets is about much more than just a desire to provide a variety of sports, entertainment and cultural opportunities. It's about more than a desire to have Venues that are the envy of cities across the globe.

These public buildings represent an opportunity to shape the future of our Central Florida home for the better. It includes ensuring local small and minority businesses participate as contractors on the project, providing job training and job placement to local residents and redeveloping our downtown.

Tomorrow at 2 p.m., the Orange County Board of County Commissioners will vote on the Interlocal agreement that will establish the funding structure for the three Community Venues and serve as the final step in the plan to secure the future of these critical downtown projects.

Our community has stood together with broad-based support for these projects from our tourism, business entertainment and cultural communities, and we are poised to take the next step in transforming our City and region to make our home better for generations to come.
