Mayor's Message

Dear Friend,

Providing quality services, planning for the future and ensuring we keep Orlando safe takes a talented team of hard working City employees. Last week, I honored two City employees with the Mayor’s Leadership Award. This annual award recognizes employees who demonstrate creativity or excellence in management resulting in positive organizational change, motivate staff resulting in increased job satisfaction and productivity, develop innovative programming resulting in organizational or policy change and streamline processes resulting in improved efficiency and effectiveness of staff and enhanced customer service. In addition, this award is unique because the recipients are nominated by their peers.

The 2007 Mayor’s Leadership award recipients are Alan Oyler, Public Works Director, and F.J. Flynn, Transportation Planning’s Division Manager.

As the Public Works Director, Alan is responsible for overseeing the solid waste, capital and infrastructure, waste water, and engineering divisions. He has also spent a great deal of time sharing what he knows with others, whether it be teaching a class to college students or foreign engineers or mentoring a school child as part of the City’s Apple Core program. Alan is always willing to give his employees time to talk to him, learning what his employees are working on and encouraging them in their tasks.

F.J. Flynn is the Transportation Planning’s Division Manager and has worked with the City since 1999. With 12 years of professional planning experience, F.J. was recognized for his ability to motivate his employees. Whether he’s stopping to check on projects, helping work through difficulties or promoting training opportunities, F.J. has nurtured a motivated team so dedicated to their work that they willingly volunteer to stay after-hours on pressing projects. He is tactful with customers, has an attention to detail and an engaging sense of humor.

I congratulate both Alan Oyler and F.J. Flynn on the leadership they provide for the City. I am proud of our City employees and their dedication to our residents.

Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
Mayor

National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month comes to an end this week with a focus on home and family preparedness. It is always important to think about your family's daily needs and consider how those needs would be met in the event of a disaster. If you have kids, older parents or pets, make sure your family can take care of their special needs.

The recent tornado in Eustis is a strong reminder that as residents of Central Florida, we need to stay prepared for natural disasters that could leave us without power, or even worse, without a home. For more information on making an emergency kit and plan, visit the City’s Office of Emergency Management web page at CityofOrando.net/emergency.

A Green Works Orlando workshop is scheduled for Monday, October 1 at 10 a.m., in City Council Chambers. Presented by Marsha Segal-George, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer and Clint Bullock with the Orlando Utilities Commission, this presentation will detail Mayor Buddy Dyer’s new Green initiative, unveiled at the dedication of the new Savannah Park Fire Station in Lake Nona. Green Works Orlando is the City’s plan to protect natural resources, encourage environmentally-friendly lifestyles and business practices and engage everyone who lives, works and visits Central Florida in the effort to “go green.”

The workshop can be viewed live on Orange TV Channel 9 or on the Internet at CityofOrlando.net.

Mayor in the Community

On Friday, Mayor Dyer attended the Early Childhood Association of Florida’s Annual Conference. The association honored the Mayor by presenting him with the “Champion of Children” award for his efforts to promote high quality pre-kindergarten education in Orlando.
