Mayor's
Message |
|
Dear Friend,
This Monday, the
University of Central Florida (UCF) will make
history by holding the White Coat Ceremony for
the first class of the UCF College of Medicine.
This tradition of presenting new medical
students with their lab coats symbolizes the
commitment of these future doctors to help and
heal others and heralds in a new era for both
the University and the City of Orlando.
Lab coats are a
very recognizable symbol of the new medical
school, but this special event also highlights
the leadership and dedication of UCF President
John Hitt and School of Medicine Dean Dr.
Deborah German, who have taken this school from
an idea to a reality. To distinguish this
inaugural class, all 40 students will receive
four-year scholarships.
This new school
not only benefits UCF and its students, it also
creates new opportunities for our community.
Just as UCF's School of Digital Media is the
foundation of our Creative Village in Downtown
Orlando, this new medical school plays a vital
role in the City's growing Medical City. With
the Burnham Institute already opened, and the
Veterans Hospital and Nemours Children's
Hospital soon to follow, Orlando is quickly
expanding its medical research and health care
facilities. This Medical City will provide new
healthcare options for our residents and will
further diversify our economy, attracting high
value jobs to the Central Florida community.
I wish these new
students and the UCF School of Medicine the best
of luck as they begin a new chapter of our
City's history.
Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
