Mayor's Message

Dear Friend,

Friday, September 25th marks Central Florida's largest community-wide volunteer event. United Way Days of Caring engages more than 1,600 volunteers in projects that benefit local nonprofit organizations and the clients they serve. I would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers who will be participating in activities last Friday ranging from painting offices to reading to children. These projects are as diverse as our community and highlight the impact we can make by working together.

This spirit of volunteerism, inspired President Barack Obama’s “United We Serve” initiative. Locally, this initiative was kicked off when Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano joined me at our Emergency Operations Center to participate in a volunteer project. Together, with other City volunteers, we built emergency kits that were then distributed to families.

Whether you can help out for a few hours or lead a project, you will contribute to our community and have the satisfaction of helping your neighbors. You will meet new people, make new friends and bring our community closer together. To find out more about volunteer opportunities in our community, call the Heart of Florida United Way's Volunteer Resource Center at 407.849.2373 or visit hfuw.org. Thank you for helping to Strengthen Orlando.

Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
Mayor

Strengthen Orlando Planning Approval Extensions

Orlando BuildsAnother effort under Strengthen Orlando amends the City’s Land Development Code, permanently extending the time frame during which certain land development approvals are valid. It also grants a one year extension to master plan and conditional use permits approvals and grants a six month extension to variances and historic preservation approvals.

During these challenging economic times, this ordinance will provide relief to our applicants by giving them extra time to move forward with projects before approval expires.
