Mayor's Message

Dear Friend,

The weather may not feel like the end of October, but kids will be trick-or-treating this weekend – and it’s time to set back our clocks. This Saturday, remember to change your smoke alarm batteries when you change your clock. Replacing the batteries twice a year will insure that your smoke alarms will be ready to protect you should a fire occur in your home.

If you don’t have a smoke alarm and you live in the City of Orlando, call the Orlando Fire Department at 407.246.3128 to request an installation of a free smoke alarm. City residents can also pick up free smoke alarm batteries at any Orlando firehouse.

In 2008, fire killed more people than all other natural disasters combined, and three-fourths of those deaths occurred in homes. Smoke alarms provide a quick warning to help you get out of the house – so don’t let old batteries get between you and safety. Change your clock, change your batteries.

Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
Mayor

Halloween Safety Tips

The Orlando Police Department (OPD) wishes all of Central Florida a happy and safe Halloween. For the safety of all children on Saturday evening, OPD recommends these safety tips.

1. Be aware of your surroundings, as awareness is the best tool for crime and accident prevention.

2. Have an adult escort. If this is not possible, have your child stay with a group.

3. Stay out of the street. Use sidewalks whenever it is possible. Some children pay more attention to their candy than they do the traffic on the streets.

4. Trick-or-Treat in familiar and safe places.

5. Outfit your children in flame-retardant costumes.

6. Outfit your child with reflectors or a light-producing device.

7. Advise your child not to eat anything until you have thoroughly inspected it.

8. Don’t let your child accept any baked goods, fruits, or any fully or partially unwrapped goodies. The exception to this rule may be if the person giving the article is known to the family and is approved by the parents.

9. If your child is trick-or-treating with an unsupervised group, please establish a route that they’ll be using. In the event that you need them, you’ll know approximately where to locate them.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact the Orlando Police Department, Community Relations Unit at 407.246.2461.
