As Mayor, I designate many special days with
proclamations. This Sunday, Mother's Day, needs
no fancy parchment to recognize the important
women it honors.
Fathers will get their due in June, but this
weekend we celebrate the love and care our
mother gives us. For some, your mother figure
might be an aunt, grandparent, sibling or
godparent that took care of you. The title is
unimportant. A mom is the one who got up in the
middle of the night to feed or change you. She
sang silly songs or read books to you again and
again. She strapped you into strollers, car
seats, booster chairs, grocery carts and swings.
Your mom likely stayed up late to help you on
school projects or served as your private
chauffeur. She knows your favorite meal.
She might still tell you what to do
regardless of your age, but as you grew from a
child to an adult, she slowly stepped back to
let you learn independence. Some moms just step
slower and not as far back as others.
Families celebrate Mother's Day in many ways,
but consider visiting Leu Gardens, with free
admission to moms on Sunday, May 13, from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. The Mennello Museum of American Art is
free to moms and the entire family on Mother's
Day from 12 to 4:30 p.m.
However you celebrate, remember that Mother's
Day is for one special person. A mom always
loves her children, so make sure that you share
your love with her on Sunday.
