Mayor's
Message |
|
Dear Friend,
With two named tropical storms already this
year and this Tuesday's quick storm that knocked
over several trees, I don't think I need to
remind you that we are officially in hurricane
season. Now is the time to get prepared, and I
urge you to review your emergency plans.
While it has been several years since we have
experienced a hurricane, it is important that
our community not be complacent. For us to
be prepared, it is critical for everyone to do
these three steps:
- develop an emergency plan
- ensure that you have the supplies in your disaster kit
- keep informed when a storm is approaching
As a City, we too are reviewing our plans and
training so that we can respond should a storm
come our way. Just last month, I attended a
table-top exercise with my department directors
to walk through an event and discuss our
necessary responses. We do these every year and
each one allows us to fine tune our process,
update our plans and discuss different
scenarios.
For more information and hurricane
preparedness tips, you can visit the
City of Orlando Emergency
Management website. As an example of
ways we improve our response, you can now follow
our
Emergency Management Office on Twitter or
Facebook.
Don't be caught by surprise. Now is the time
to prepare for hurricane season.
Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
Mayor

National Night Out
Celebrate the
29th Annual National Night Out Tuesday, August
7.
National Night
Out is a time for communities to come together
and take a stand against drugs and crime in our
neighborhoods. The most common celebrations are
block parties and pot lucks. One of the goals of
National Night Out is to assist in the
strengthening of neighborhood spirit and
police-community partnerships by sending a
message to criminals that neighborhoods are
organized.
This year's theme
is “Celebrating Safe Communities.” To register
or for more information,

Department's Neighborhood Watch Unit at

Association Tip: Use Meeting Ground Rules
Setting
association meeting ground rules is important to
how your association will make your meetings
productive and successful.
If you already have a core set of ground rules,
association members should vote to accept or not
accept each rule. If your association doesn't
have a set of ground rules, begin with defining
what a successful association meeting is and what
is important to members in regards to acceptable
behavior at your meetings. Brainstorm a list and
then talk through each item to ensure members
have a clear understanding and can abide by that
rule. When you finalize your list, get
confirmation from members by having them vote by
raising their hand to physically acknowledge
they agree to abide by the meeting rules. Here
are examples of meeting ground rules:
- Start and
end the meeting on time
- Turn off or
silence cell phones
- Be present,
both physically and mentally
- Have a
prepared agenda with an objective and
expected outcomes
- One person
speaks at a time
- Respect the
members' time and keep comments brief and to
the point
- Listen
actively and carefully
- Participate
openly and honestly
- Treat
everyone with courtesy and respect
- Complete
action items as committed
Share your
events, photographs, best practices and
processes that are working in your neighborhood
with other neighborhood organizations throughout
the City. Contact Cindy Light with the Office of
Communications and Neighborhood Relations at
Cindy.Light@CityofOrlando.net. |
