Trash in Our Sewer
You may be surprised at some of the odd things that have been pulled out of the sanitary sewers here in the City of Orlando. Take for instance an entire bed sheet that somehow entered the sewer system and caused a major issue in our system several years ago. Although bed sheets are rare, here are a few common items we do see in the sanitary sewer system that still cause problems every day.
FATS, OIL AND GREASE
Pouring these items down the drain after cooking may sound harmless, but they can cause a load of problems by sticking to the insides of pipes and sewer equipment over time
Though many think that its ok to flush these items down the drain, they can cause severe blockages very quickly.
There are many different wipes sold in stores these days from make up removers to butt wipes to counter top cleaners. These wipes, even if marked flushable, should be thrown into the trash as they can quickly cause blockages in your sewer lines.
There are many out there in Orlando who still rely on the In-Sink Garbage Disposal as a means of making unwanted/ uneaten foods disappear. In reality, the disposal only grinds the food waste small enough to fit into your sink drain where it can sit in the pipes and cause buildup and blockages. Take a moment today to think about what you are putting down the drain and whether or not it can cause future problems. Remember our sewer motto, “Trash It, Don’t Splash It.”
